Written in true roman à clef fashion, it parallels Plath’s own experiences with her mental illness and her unhealthy obsession with death. In her semi-autobiographical novel, Plath uses black comedy and vivid imagery to effectively portray how the suffocating pressure to conform to societal norms can adversely affect the human psyche, and how receiving the proper kind of help can make a significant difference to those affected. She portrays this in a way allows the readers to understand and relate to these issues presented, despite how they initially seem foreign.
